OpenAI Launches Astra for Law to Bring AI-Powered Legal Research to Law Firms
Astra for Law combines GPT-6 Astra with a dedicated Legal Search Index and custom instructions for legal analysis and writing.
OpenAI has launched Astra for Law, a legal-focused configuration of its GPT-6 Astra model designed to help law firms and legal technology companies with research, analysis, drafting and other professional legal workflows.
The San Francisco-based startup launched GPT-6 Astra, its latest flagship AI model, earlier this month.

Astra for Law combines GPT-6 Astra with a dedicated Legal Search Index and custom instructions for legal analysis and writing. The index can search US case law, statutes, regulations, court rules and administrative decisions, with new sources added daily.
"At the highest reasoning effort for both systems, Astra for Law passed the evaluation’s overall correctness check on 54.0% of questions, compared with 38.7% for GPT‑6 Astra using web search alone – a 40% relative improvement. Astra for Law also produces more comprehensive answers," OpenAI said.
The model is designed to go beyond general-purpose AI search by helping lawyers investigate legal questions using specific client facts, develop arguments and examine counterarguments. It can also be used to analyse cases that could weaken a legal position and identify relevant authorities.
"We are also expanding our work on privacy and governance to give law firms specific controls for confidential client work. Firms can also customize Astra for Law using our 26 new ecosystem plugins that connect ChatGPT to the specialist tools firms already use, like Relativity and Clio," OpenAI said.
OpenAI is initially making Astra for Law available to selected US law firms through Trusted Access, ChatGPT and Codex, with API access planned later.
