OpenAI Names Former Uber India Chief Prabhjeet Singh to Lead India Business
At Uber, Singh helped the company expand its India operations to more than 75 million consumers and 2 million monthly earners.
OpenAI has appointed Prabhjeet Singh as Managing Director of its India business, bringing the former Uber India and South Asia chief to lead the company’s expansion in one of its largest and fastest-growing markets.
Singh, who spent nearly 11 years at Uber, announced the appointment on LinkedIn, saying he had joined OpenAI to “lead the India business.” He said the opportunity to shape AI’s role in India was a key reason behind his decision to join the company.
“I love building and scaling new businesses: taking an ambitious idea, turning it into something people value, and building the teams and systems that help it reach millions,” Singh wrote.
Singh’s appointment comes as OpenAI seeks to deepen adoption of its AI products in India and expand the role of Indian developers, startups and enterprises in building AI applications.
“The work now is to turn that adoption into real, lasting impact,” Singh said.
His priorities include making advanced AI “more useful, accessible and affordable” across India, while helping companies address business challenges and giving developers and startups tools to build products for India and global markets.
Singh also highlighted opportunities across education, employment and everyday applications of AI, arguing that India should play a role in shaping the technology rather than simply consuming it.
“India should not only benefit from the future of AI. India should help build it,” he said. “And what gets built here should shape how AI is used everywhere.”
At Uber, Singh helped the company expand its India operations to more than 75 million consumers and 2 million monthly earners, while its India operations recorded more than 1.6 billion trips.
Singh previously spent nine years at McKinsey & Company, advising companies and CEOs across India and Southeast Asia on business performance, sales and operations transformation.
