Anthropic Acqui-Hires AI Startup Mendral to Advance Claude's AI Coding Capabilities
Founded by former Docker engineers and Dagger co-founders Sam Alba & Andrea Luzzardi, Mendral developed AI agents designed to automate software engineering tasks
Anthropic is acqui-hiring AI startup Mendral and its whole team to work on the Claude platform. As part of the move, Mendral will wind down its hosted product and work directly with customers to ensure a smooth transition. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Founded by former Docker engineers and Dagger co-founders Sam Alba & Andrea Luzzardi, Mendral developed AI agents designed to automate software engineering tasks such as diagnosing continuous integration (CI) failures, fixing flaky tests, reviewing dependency updates, and handling other routine development work. The startup was part of Y Combinator's Winter 2026 (YC W26) accelerator cohort.
"We built on frontier models and lived their progress first-hand. Every few months, a new model made part of our roadmap unnecessary and a bigger part of it possible. There's no better place to work on what software engineering is becoming than with the team building those models," Alba said.
The founders said the company's vision evolved from building developer tools to creating AI agents capable of completing engineering tasks autonomously. Claude has powered Mendral's platform since its inception, with successive model improvements enabling the startup to automate increasingly complex workflows.
In a blog post announcing the move, the founders said, “We started the company to automate the engineering work that isn't your product: diagnosing CI failures, fixing flaky tests, reviewing the dependency updates nobody reads. We'll be continuing that work as part of Anthropic.”
Explaining the decision to join Anthropic, they added, “That's why our team is joining Anthropic to work on Claude Platform. There's no better place for the Mendral team to work on what software engineering is becoming.”
The addition of the Mendral team is expected to strengthen Anthropic's efforts to expand Claude's capabilities for developers and enterprise software engineering workflows.
Earlier this year, Anthropic acquired Stainless, a startup specialising in SDK generation and MCP server tooling, as it looks to expand the capabilities of AI agents and improve how they connect with external systems and tools.
