Zuckerberg Says All Codes Will be Written by AI in 12-18 Months

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has recently made a very bold claim. He said that in the next 12-18 months, AI will write all the code in his company.

"Most of the code will be written by AI. It won’t just be autocomplete. AI agents will set goals, run tests, find problems & write better code than top engineers," he said while speaking in a podcast.

Interestingly, during a fireside chat with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg at the LlamaCon conference on Tuesday, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed that AI currently generates between 20% and 30% of the code in the company’s repositories.

Nadella shared the estimate in response to Zuckerberg's question about the current extent of AI-generated code at Microsoft.

He noted that results vary by programming language, with AI performing better in languages like Python and showing less progress in C++.

Previously, Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott projected that by 2030, 95% of all code could be generated by AI.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai earlier revealed that 30% of the codes in his company is being written by AI.

AI code assistants have emerged as one of the best use cases of Large Language Models (LLMs) since it grabbed the limelight back in 2022 with the launch of ChatGPT.

Earlier, Cursor co-founder Aman Sanger also revealed that Cursor is writing 1 billion lines of accepted code each day.

"To put things into perspective, the entire world produces just a few billion lines daily," Sanger said.

In a social media post, he further said that around 40% of the codes written by professional engineers is generated by Cursor.
