Cockroach Labs Launches Continuum to Manage Enterprise Databases as One Elastic System
Continuum pools capacity across multiple databases, automates operational tasks and uses consumption-based pricing.
Cockroach Labs, the company behind distributed SQL database CockroachDB, has introduced Cockroach Continuum, a platform designed to let enterprises manage their database estates as a single elastic system.
The company said Continuum pools capacity across multiple databases, automates operational tasks and uses consumption-based pricing rather than charging customers based on peak infrastructure provisioned.

The approach is intended to reduce unused capacity while allowing enterprises to scale AI workloads without maintaining dedicated infrastructure for individual databases.
"The database industry has always asked customers to guess their peak and pay for it whether they hit it or not. Agents don't work that way, and neither should the bill. Continuum applies what we've learned about operating through that complexity across the entire database estate. It puts idle capacity to work and automates operational toil so customers can scale without sacrificing the resilience and correctness their most critical systems depend on," said Spencer Kimball, Cockroach Labs Co-founder and CEO.
Continuum is built around five capabilities. Its database virtualisation technology allows thousands of isolated databases to share underlying infrastructure. Cockroach Plenum, the company's storage substrate, separates compute from storage so each can scale independently.

The platform also includes Cockroach Aegis, an AI-assisted operations layer that can diagnose issues and recommend actions across a database estate. Administrators retain control through policies while the system handles routine operational work.
Continuum will charge for compute and storage based on usage, including vCPU-hours and bytes consumed. Automatic compute scaling, which will adjust resources according to demand, is planned for a future release.
Cockroach Labs also pointed to rising demand for AI computing as a reason for changing the economics of enterprise databases.
