In 2024, U.S.-based institutions led global AI development, producing 40 notable models, far surpassing China’s 15 and Europe’s three, according to the 2025 AI Index report.

China also maintains leadership in AI research publications and patents. Meanwhile, AI model development is becoming increasingly global, with significant contributions emerging from the Middle East, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.

During the period, private AI investment in the U.S. soared to $109.1 billion—outpacing China’s $9.3 billion nearly 12-fold and the U.K.’s $4.5 billion by 24 times.

Generative AI attracted $33.9 billion globally, marking an 18.7% year-over-year rise. AI adoption among businesses also surged, with 78% of organizations leveraging AI tools in 2024, up from 55% in 2023.

Governments worldwide are ramping up AI investments: Canada has pledged $2.4 billion, China launched a $47.5 billion semiconductor fund, France committed €109 billion, India announced $1.25 billion, and Saudi Arabia’s Project Transcendence represents a $100 billion initiative.
