Anthropic Opens Claude AI to Scientists Tackling Rare Diseases with $50,000 Grant

Anthropic has launched a new grant programme to accelerate research into rare genetic diseases by providing researchers and early-stage biotechnology companies with access to its AI models through Claude API credits.
The initiative, introduced under the company's AI for Science programme, is Anthropic's first themed funding call and will support projects focused on advancing the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of rare diseases.
Successful applicants will receive up to $50,000 in Claude API credits over six months to develop and test AI-powered research workflows. Applications are open until August 2, 2026.
The programme is divided into two tracks. The first targets academic researchers and clinicians studying the biology of rare diseases, with research outputs expected to be shared openly through the Monarch Initiative, a platform that integrates genetic and disease data.
The second track is designed for biotech startups and translational research teams using AI to accelerate drug discovery, streamline clinical trial design, and improve regulatory documentation.
Anthropic said it shifted to disease-specific grant programmes after observing that researchers working on common scientific challenges made greater progress by sharing methods and collaborating with one another.
The company also plans to organise community activities, including rare disease hackathons, to foster collaboration among participants.
Anthropic acknowledged that while AI can accelerate scientific discovery, it is not a complete solution to the challenges surrounding rare diseases, noting that issues such as limited biological data, access to diagnostics, and healthcare infrastructure will continue to require collaboration between researchers, healthcare providers, and policymakers.
