Sarvam AI Announces San Francisco Office, Taps AI Researcher Deepak Chaplot as Advisor
Sarvam AI also unveiled plans to build a one trillion-plus parameter foundation model.
Indian AI startup Sarvam AI has announced the opening of a San Francisco office, marking its first major international expansion at its Epoch conference in Bengaluru.
Alongside the expansion, Sarvam has appointed AI researcher
Devendra Chaplot as a hands-on advisor to support the development of its next-generation frontier AI models.
An IIT Bombay graduate with a PhD in Machine Learning from Carnegie Mellon University, he previously worked at Meta AI, was a founding member of Mistral AI, contributed to models including Mistral 7B and Mixtral, and later joined Mira Murati's Thinking Machines Lab before advising Sarvam.
At the event, Sarvam AI also unveiled plans to build a one trillion-plus parameter foundation model, one of the most ambitious AI projects announced by an Indian startup.
The company said the model is being developed from scratch in India and will target advanced enterprise use cases, including coding, cybersecurity, scientific research, and large-scale simulations.
Sarvam also introduced a new pricing strategy for its flagship Sarvam 105B model, claiming it delivers AI inference at 5.5 times lower cost than comparable global models.
Co-Founder Vivek Raghavan also announced Sarvam Inference to help Indian enterprises and developers access the best frontier models in the world on Indian infrastructure.
"Today, if I want to use the world's best open-source AI models, I often have to access them on infrastructure hosted outside India. If India wants to truly control its AI capabilities and intelligence, these models need to run on infrastructure located within the country," Raghavan said.
The startup said its models are hosted entirely in India and are designed to support the country's growing demand for sovereign AI infrastructure.
