Meta’s AI Overhaul Triggers 8,000 Layoffs, 7,000 Role Shifts

Meta Platforms is restructuring its workforce around artificial intelligence, reassigning nearly 7,000 employees to new AI-focused roles while laying off around 8,000 workers this week, according to reports.

The reorganization, detailed in an internal memo from Chief People Officer Janelle Gale and first reported by Bloomberg, creates four new divisions dedicated to AI products, enterprise tools, analytics and agent development.

The move is part of Meta’s broader push to accelerate its position in the rapidly evolving generative AI market.

The newly formed teams include Applied AI Engineering, Agent Transformation Accelerator XFN, Central Analytics and Enterprise Solutions.

Two of the units will support Meta’s “AI for Work” initiative, while Central Analytics will monitor the performance and productivity of the company’s internal AI agents.

Gale reportedly told employees the new structure would be “flatter” with “smaller teams,” relying on “AI native design structures” that reduce management layers and streamline operations.

The reshuffle coincides with layoffs announced earlier this year that will reduce Meta’s workforce by roughly 10%.

The company is also eliminating about 6,000 open positions. U.S.-based employees impacted by the cuts will receive 16 weeks of base pay, additional compensation tied to tenure, and extended health coverage.

Meta had 77,986 employees at the end of March, down from its 2022 peak of more than 86,000 workers.

The company is redirecting savings from the cuts into AI infrastructure investments. Meta now expects capital expenditures between $125 billion and $145 billion this year, largely focused on data centres, custom AI chips and related systems.
