India’s First AI Lab for Railway Safety Inaugurated at IISc

India’s first dedicated AI Lab for Railway Safety was inaugurated on April 24, 2025, by Sri Praveen Kumar IRSE, Managing Director of DFCCIL, in the presence of IISc faculty and representatives from a railway-focused IISc startup.
Located at the Research Centre (iHUB) within the IISc campus, the lab aims to pioneer AI-enabled deep tech systems specifically for railway safety. A key focus will be the development of rail-specific foundational models that can help predict and prevent accidents.
The AI Lab is an initiative of L2M Rail, India’s first startup focused on railway safety and efficiency, developing cutting-edge Cyber Physical Systems using AI, IoT, ML, cloud computing, and big data.
The initiative marks a significant step towards the Indian Railways' goal of achieving “Accident-Free Indian Railways by 2030.”
By integrating artificial intelligence with cutting-edge research, the lab will serve as a hub for innovation in real-time safety monitoring, predictive maintenance, and advanced analytics tailored for India’s railway infrastructure.
This collaboration highlights the growing role of academia and startups in advancing national transportation safety.
