Ilya Sutskever's SSI to Release First AI Model in August
The timeline was revealed by investor Gavin Baker during a recent appearance on the Invest Like the Best podcast.
Safe Superintelligence (SSI), the AI startup co-founded by former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, is reportedly preparing to release its first AI model later this month, marking a significant milestone for one of the industry's most closely watched startups.
The timeline was revealed by investor Gavin Baker during a recent appearance on the Invest Like the Best podcast, where he said SSI is targeting an August debut for its inaugural model.
The company has not officially confirmed the launch or shared technical details about the model. The Left Shift has reached out to SSI for confirmation.
The anticipated release has generated excitement across the AI industry, particularly because SSI has largely operated in stealth since its formation.
Unlike many AI companies that have focused on commercial products, the startup has maintained a low profile while emphasising long-term research into safe and highly capable AI systems.
The anticipated launch has also fueled speculation across social media, with some AI enthusiasts suggesting SSI may have achieved significant breakthroughs toward superintelligence—claims the company has neither confirmed nor commented on.
"SSI is our mission, our name, and our entire product roadmap, because it is our sole focus. Our team, investors, and business model are all aligned to achieve SSI," it says on its website.
Just a quick reminder: There is no universally accepted definition of superintelligence, just as there isn't one for AGI.

This is problematic because the terms are used in different ways. Dario Amodei writes about superintelligence in his blog, but elsewhere it's understood more… https://t.co/q0a3N7J3rv
Founded in June 2024, Safe Superintelligence was launched by Ilya Sutskever, former OpenAI chief scientist, alongside Daniel Gross, an AI entrepreneur and former Apple executive, and Daniel Levy, a former OpenAI researcher.
The company was created shortly after Sutskever's departure from OpenAI, with a singular mission of building safe superintelligence without the distractions of consumer products or near-term commercial pressures.
Since its launch, SSI has reportedly raised around $3 billion from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, Greenoaks, Alphabet and NVIDIA, reaching an estimated $32 billion valuation.
The startup has repeatedly said it is pursuing a "straight-shot" approach—focusing exclusively on developing safe superintelligence before expanding into broader commercial offerings.
