Google Announces New AI-Powered Workspace Upgrades to Boost Office Productivity

Google has announced a series of artificial intelligence-driven updates to its Workspace productivity suite at its annual Google Cloud Next event. Central to the update is Workspace Intelligence, a new AI system embedded across the company’s office tools.

The system draws on user data from Gmail, Calendar, Chat, and Drive applications such as Docs, Slides, and Sheets to provide contextual assistance.

Google said users will retain administrative control, allowing them to limit or disable access to specific data sources, though broader access enables more effective automation.

The company also introduced expanded capabilities for Google Sheets powered by its Gemini AI model. Users can now create spreadsheets through prompts, including formatting and data retrieval tasks, while Gemini can automatically populate entries.

Google claims this feature enables users to fill sheets up to nine times faster than manual input. Another addition allows the conversion of unstructured data into organised tables.

In Google Docs, new AI writing tools enable users to “generate, write, and refine” content. By leveraging Workspace Intelligence, Gemini can draw on internal files and online information to assist with drafting and editing, including mimicking a user’s writing style.
