OpenAI Debuts Personalised Finance Assistant Inside ChatGPT

OpenAI on Monday announced a preview of a new personal finance experience inside ChatGPT, allowing Pro users in the United States to securely connect their financial accounts and receive AI-powered insights tailored to their spending habits, savings goals, and investment activity.

The feature, rolling out initially to a limited group of ChatGPT Pro users on web and iOS, integrates with more than 12,000 financial institutions through Plaid, with support for Intuit expected soon.

Users can access a dedicated “Finances” section in ChatGPT to link accounts, monitor spending, track subscriptions, review portfolio performance, and ask personalized financial questions.

OpenAI said the new experience combines advances in GPT-5.5 reasoning with users’ real financial data and personal goals to deliver more contextual financial guidance. Users can ask questions about budgeting, saving for large purchases, investment risks, subscription management, or long-term planning.

"With your financial accounts connected, ChatGPT can combine that reasoning with your real financial context and what you’ve shared about your goals, lifestyle, and priorities, helping you spot patterns, understand tradeoffs, and plan for big decisions in a way that feels more personal and complete," the company said.

The company said more than 200 million people already use ChatGPT each month for financial-related queries, including budgeting, investment comparisons, and retirement planning. The new feature aims to turn those conversations into more actionable and personalized experiences.

OpenAI emphasised that ChatGPT is not a substitute for professional financial advice. The company said the AI can help users understand tradeoffs and identify patterns in their finances, but decisions involving taxes, investments, or lending should still involve qualified professionals.

To address privacy concerns, OpenAI said ChatGPT cannot access full account numbers or make changes to connected accounts. Users can disconnect accounts at any time, after which synced financial data will be deleted from OpenAI systems within 30 days. Financial memories and conversations can also be manually deleted.

Conversations using connected financial accounts will run on GPT-5.5 Thinking by default, which OpenAI said scored 79 out of 100 on an internal benchmark measuring performance on complex personal finance tasks.
