Zscaler Buys SquareX to Strengthen Browser Security Push

Zscaler Inc. has acquired cybersecurity startup SquareX in a move aimed at expanding its secure browser and data protection capabilities as enterprises shift to cloud-based work and AI-driven workflows. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The acquisition will see SquareX’s technology integrated into Zscaler’s Zero Trust Exchange platform, enhancing its ability to secure web sessions, prevent data leakage and defend against advanced browser-based threats.

SquareX specialises in browser security that runs in the cloud, helping organisations isolate risky web activity and protect users without requiring traditional virtual desktop infrastructure.

“Enterprises have historically relied on legacy VPNs and VDIs, but these technologies are fundamentally flawed and laden with security risks,” said Jay Chaudhry, CEO, Chairman, and Founder of Zscaler. “With SquareX, Zscaler is deepening our Zero Trust ExchangeTM Platform’s capabilities in standard browsers, such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, to stop threats without having to deploy a third-party enterprise browser. Zscaler continues to set the standard as we evolve into an increasingly powerful platform for global enterprise security.”

Zscaler said the combination will give customers deeper protection across SaaS apps, generative AI tools and unmanaged devices, areas where browser-based attacks and data exfiltration risks are rising.

The company aims to provide more granular visibility and control over web sessions while maintaining performance for remote and hybrid workforces.

“By integrating with Zscaler, we will enable organisations to secure SaaS and private applications across any device - managed or BYOD - without compromising productivity,” said Vivek Ramachandran, founder of SquareX. “This approach allows IT leaders to replace expensive, insecure legacy access tools with precise Zero Trust policies that protect data and AI interactions based on an organization’s specific risk profile.”

In November last year, Zscaler acquired innovative AI security specialist SPLX.
