WordPress Unveils Experimental AI Tool ‘Telex’ to Simplify Website Building

WordPress, the world’s most widely used web publishing platform, has introduced an early version of its new AI-powered development tool, Telex, at the WordCamp US 2025 conference in Portland.

The tool, described by WordPress co-founder and Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg as a “V0 or Lovable, but specifically for WordPress,” draws inspiration from emerging “vibe coding” platforms that allow developers to create software using natural language prompts.

Earlier this year, WordPress also introduced a new AI-powered website builder designed to help anyone — from freelancers to bloggers to entrepreneurs — quickly launch a professional-looking website through a simple, conversational interface.

Telex enables users to generate Gutenberg blocks — the modular components that make up WordPress sites — simply by typing a prompt. The tool then returns a .zip file that can be installed as a plug-in on WordPress or run directly in WordPress Playground, the browser-based version of the platform.

While still labeled “experimental” and available at telex.automattic.ai, early tests have shown mixed results, with some projects requiring fixes to function properly.

Mullenweg acknowledged Telex is still a prototype but emphasised its long-term potential. “When we think about democratized publishing, like embedded in that, is very core to WordPress’ mission… made it accessible in a radically open way, in every language, at low cost, open source,” he said.

Alongside Telex, Mullenweg showcased smaller AI experiments, including a browser-based WordPress assistant, and highlighted his enthusiasm for AI-driven publishing tools.
