Autonomous vehicle pioneer Waymo has reached a monumental milestone—100 million miles driven autonomously on public roads, equivalent to more than 200 round-trips to the Moon, according to a post on X .

This achievement underscores Waymo’s growing dominance in self-driving technology. The company—spun out of Google and now part of Alphabet—has deployed its Waymo Driver systems in cities including Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Austin, with expansion underway in Miami and Washington, DC.

Waymo reports dramatic safety gains: 88% fewer serious injury crashes and 79% fewer airbag deployment events compared to human drivers. These figures highlight the potential of autonomous tech to improve road safety and reduce traffic fatalities.

As Waymo continues integrating its autonomous ride-hailing service, Waymo One, across multiple U.S. markets, this milestone demonstrates its maturity. The company is also ramping up mapping efforts in new cities such as Boston, San Diego, and Orlando.

Earlier this year, the company begun tasting its fleet in New York City—but with human drivers at the wheel.

While Waymo has previously tested manually in NYC for winter weather, this will be its first major step under the city’s autonomous vehicle permit programme, introduced by Mayor Eric Adams.
