Visa is deepening its push into AI-powered payments with the expansion of its Visa Intelligent Commerce program, aimed at enabling what it calls the “next era of agentic commerce.” On Thursday, the company announced two major additions: the Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server and the Visa Acceptance Agent Toolkit.

The MCP Server acts as a secure integration layer between AI agents and Visa’s network. By connecting directly to Visa Intelligent Commerce APIs, developers can move from prototype to production in hours instead of weeks, without managing complex authentication or building bespoke integrations.

"For AI agents and LLMs to interact with Visa’s trusted network, they need a secure, consistent way to communicate with our services. The Visa MCP Server makes this possible — starting with Visa Intelligent Commerce APIs and designed to extend across Visa’s broader API portfolio over time," Visa said.

Building on that foundation, the Visa Acceptance Agent Toolkit — now in pilot — enables both developers and business users to trigger commerce workflows using plain language prompts. For example, users can type “Create an invoice for $100 due Friday,” and the system automatically generates a secure payment link via Visa’s Invoice API. The toolkit supports invoicing, pay-by-link, and other use cases, with additional features planned.

Visa said these tools are designed to scale securely, with role-based access controls and policies built in by default. By lowering barriers for both technical and non-technical users, the company hopes to accelerate adoption of trusted agentic commerce.

“Trust is crucial in AI-driven payments,” Visa noted, adding that it has spent decades applying AI and machine learning across its vast payments network. With MCP and the Acceptance Agent Toolkit now available in pilot, Visa plans to expand into new B2B and B2C scenarios, positioning itself at the center of AI-powered commerce.
