upGrad Co-founder Launches BorderPlus AI Nurse Companion to Support Global Healthcare Workers

upGrad co-founder Mayank Kumar has announced the launch of the BorderPlus AI Nurse Companion, an artificial intelligence-powered product designed to assist nurses in their international migration journeys.

The product will debut on November 5, 2025, at Deutscher Pflegetag in Berlin, Germany’s leading nursing conference.

The AI Nurse Companion aims to support healthcare professionals across every stage of their migration — from language learning and cultural adaptation to day-to-day hospital readiness.

Built under Kumar’s new venture BorderPlus, the platform marks a shift from upGrad’s “digital-first” approach to what he calls an “AI-first pedagogy.”

According to Kumar, the product combines months of technical development and collaboration with German healthcare professionals. It features speech-to-text and text-to-speech models trained on authentic German data, context-aware hospital conversations, and AI guardrails to ensure safe and ethical interactions.

“This isn’t just another AI app,” Kumar wrote on LinkedIn. “It’s an adaptive learning companion that bridges the gap between learning and living, ambition and arrival.”

While the initial focus is on nurses, BorderPlus plans to expand its AI solutions to assist skilled migrant workers globally, helping them integrate, upskill, and thrive in new environments.

Two months after leaving upGrad, cofounder Mayank Kumar has launched BorderPlus, an edtech startup focused on helping Indian nurses secure jobs in German healthcare facilities.

The platform assists candidates with conditional offer letters, visa processes, and language readiness, requiring B1/B2 German proficiency.
