TypeScript Overtakes JavaScript as Most-Used Language on GitHub
Most major front-end frameworks now default to TypeScript, marking its firm establishment across the developer ecosystem.
TypeScript, Microsoft’s typed variant of JavaScript, has officially become the most-used programming language on GitHub for the first time, according to the platform’s Octoverse 2025 report released on October 28.
As of August 2025, TypeScript surpassed both JavaScript and Python in usage. GitHub said the trend reflects a broader shift toward typed languages that make AI-assisted and agent-driven coding more reliable in production environments.
Most major front-end frameworks now default to TypeScript, marking its firm establishment across the developer ecosystem.
"Even still, Python remains dominant for AI and data science workloads, while the JavaScript/TypeScript ecosystem still accounts for more overall activity than Python alone," GitHub said.
The report also highlighted how generative AI is transforming the way developers code: over 1.1 million public repositories now use large language model SDKs, with nearly 700,000 of them created in the past year.
Developers merged a record 518.7 million pull requests in the 2025 period—a 29% annual increase—while 80% of new users used GitHub Copilot within their first week.
GitHub said AI is now influencing not just how developers code but also what they choose to code with. “Agents are here,” the report stated, “and we expect far greater activity in the months and years ahead.”
The report further revealed that India has officially overtaken the United States to become the world’s largest base of open-source contributors, marking a major milestone in the country’s rise as a global coding powerhouse.
