OpenAI’s Sora Becomes No. 1 App on U.S. App Store Within Days of Launch

OpenAI’s new AI video app Sora has become a viral sensation, reaching No. 1 on the U.S. App Store just days after launch — despite being invite-only and limited to users in the U.S. and Canada.

According to data from Appfigures, Sora recorded 56,000 downloads on day one and 164,000 installs within its first two days (September 30–October 1). By comparison, ChatGPT and Gemini achieved around 81,000 and 80,000 downloads on their respective first days.

The app’s debut outpaced launches of other major AI tools such as Anthropic’s Claude and Microsoft’s Copilot, and matched xAI’s Grok. It now ranks ahead of both Google Gemini and OpenAI’s own ChatGPT on the App Store’s charts.

Even with its invite-only rollout, Sora’s early numbers indicate strong consumer appetite for AI-driven video creation tools that blend creativity and social interaction.
