OpenAI Reportedly Building GitHub Rival as AI Giant Expands Developer Ambitions

OpenAI is reportedly developing a new code-hosting platform designed to compete with GitHub, signaling a potential strategic shift as the artificial intelligence company deepens its role in the software development ecosystem.

According to a report by The Information, which cited a person familiar with the matter, the initiative is still in its early stages but could eventually evolve into a commercial product offered to developers beyond OpenAI’s internal teams.

Engineers at OpenAI have reportedly raised concerns about an increase in service disruptions on GitHub in recent months that temporarily made the platform unavailable. Those outages are said to have triggered internal discussions about building an alternative repository platform better suited to OpenAI’s operational needs.

While the project is unlikely to be completed for several months, employees have reportedly considered offering the code-hosting service to the broader developer community if development progresses successfully.

Such a move would place OpenAI in direct competition with Microsoft, which owns GitHub and remains one of OpenAI’s most important partners and investors. The two companies have collaborated closely, with Microsoft providing major cloud infrastructure and financial support for OpenAI’s rapid growth.

The reported project comes amid surging investor enthusiasm for AI. OpenAI was recently valued at about $840 billion after a massive funding round reportedly involving SoftBank and other major technology investors.
