OpenAI Plans Data Center in India Amid Global AI Expansion: Report

OpenAI is planning to establish a major data center in India, according to a Bloomberg report, citing unnamed sources. The facility, expected to have at least 1 gigawatt of capacity, would be part of OpenAI’s Stargate initiative—its global AI infrastructure push.

The company has already registered as a legal entity in India and begun building a local team. In August, OpenAI confirmed plans to open its first India office in New Delhi later this year, reflecting the country’s importance as its second-largest market by user base.

While the location and timeline for the data center remain uncertain, reports suggest CEO Sam Altman could announce the project during his September visit to India.

The move comes after U.S. President Donald Trump unveiled Stargate in January, a $500 billion private-sector investment backed by OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle to strengthen AI infrastructure worldwide.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Oracle is investing $40 billion to purchase NVIDIA chips for a massive AI data centre being built for OpenAI. The deal includes around 400,000 GB200 Grace Blackwell processors, each combining two NVIDIA B200 GPUs with a 72-core CPU.
