OpenAI Introduces MCP Server Tools in ChatGPT Developer Mode
The inclusion of MCP Server Tools is seen as part of OpenAI’s broader push to better serve developers building applications on ChatGPT.

OpenAI has rolled out MCP Server Tools into Developer Mode for ChatGPT, enabling developers and engineers greater control over server‐side operations. The new suite of tools is designed to streamline backend tasks, facilitate diagnostics, and support custom deployment configurations within ChatGPT’s environment.
With MCP Server Tools enabled, users in Developer Mode can undertake activities such as inspecting server health, managing logs, and tuning performance thresholds.
According to early reports, these tools offer direct visibility into request processing, queue management, and resource utilisation—features that had previously required external monitoring solutions.
We’ve (finally) added full support for MCP tools in ChatGPT.

The inclusion of MCP Server Tools is seen as part of OpenAI’s broader push to better serve developers building applications on ChatGPT. By integrating server diagnostics and operational controls directly, OpenAI aims to reduce friction for development, testing, and production deployments.
While full documentation and best‐practice guidelines are still being finalised, several developers have already noted that the tools could help identify bottlenecks more quickly and improve overall stability for production use cases.
Others caution that, with great power comes more responsibility: inappropriate modifications or misuse of MCP tools could potentially lead to misconfigurations or security risks.
OpenAI has not yet confirmed whether MCP Server Tools will become available in standard user tiers, or what limitations will apply, but expected updates will be published on their developer site.
