India Emerges as ChatGPT Powerhouse With 100 Mn Weekly Users, Says OpenAI CEO

India has around 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users, making the country one of OpenAI’s largest global markets, CEO Sam Altman said ahead of a government-hosted AI summit in New Delhi.

In an article published in The Times of India, Altman highlighted India’s rapid adoption of ChatGPT as the company prepares to participate in the India AI Impact Summit. He noted the country is now ChatGPT’s second-largest user base after the United States, driven by a young population and more than a billion internet users.

OpenAI has stepped up its India focus in recent months, opening a New Delhi office in 2025 and launching lower-cost subscription options, including a sub-$5 tier that was later offered free for a year to Indian users. Altman also pointed to students as a key growth driver, saying India has the largest number of student users globally.

Rivals are also targeting the market. Google has rolled out student-focused AI offerings, and its Gemini platform has seen strong uptake in learning use cases.

Altman said India’s scale and focus on access position it to shape “democratic AI” globally, while noting challenges in monetisation and infrastructure. He added OpenAI plans new partnerships with the Indian government and stakeholders to expand access and practical AI adoption across the country.
