Google Gemini App Helps Create 5 Bn Images in Less Than a Month

September 25, 2025 — Google’s Gemini app has reached a remarkable milestone, generating more than 5 billion images in less than a month, cementing its status as one of the fastest-growing AI applications worldwide.

The announcement was shared on X by Google VP Josh Woodward, while CEO Sundar Pichai marked the achievement with his own AI-generated 3D avatar.

The app’s explosive growth has been fueled not only by its core AI tools but also by viral user-driven trends. The latest sensation is “retro selfies” — playful images of users holding a baby version of themselves — which has taken social platforms by storm. The quirky trend highlights how AI is blending nostalgia with creativity, further boosting Gemini’s visibility.

At the center of Gemini’s success is “Nano Banana,” the image-generation model behind the app’s viral appeal. Launched in late August, Banana enables users to easily craft 3D figurine-style portraits, remix photos, and maintain visual consistency across edits. Its intuitive features quickly captivated creators, sparking a viral wave that propelled Gemini to the No. 1 spot on the U.S. App Store, ahead of rivals including ChatGPT.

Google’s Gemini app surged to the top of global charts in September, recording 12.6 million downloads — a 45% rise from August’s 8.7 million, per Appfigures. Previously, its peak was No. 3 on January 28, 2025.
