Elon Musk’s X and xAI Sue Apple and OpenAI Over Alleged AI Monopoly Collusion
The lawsuit claims Apple is using its dominant position in the smartphone market to favor OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Elon Musk’s companies X and xAI have filed a lawsuit against Apple and OpenAI, accusing the tech giants of colluding to suppress competition in the artificial intelligence sector. Filed Monday, the suit claims Apple is using its dominant position in the smartphone market to favor OpenAI’s ChatGPT, hindering innovation and fair competition.
“Just like Apple, OpenAI has incentive to protect its monopoly by thwarting competition and innovation in the generative AI chatbot market. And just like Apple, it has done so in violation of the antitrust laws,” the lawsuit states.
This legal move escalates an ongoing feud between Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Musk, a former co-founder of OpenAI, has previously sued to block the company’s shift to a for-profit model and even made a $97.4 billion takeover offer, which OpenAI rejected.
Musk also voiced antitrust concerns earlier this month, claiming on X that Apple’s partnership makes it “impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store.”
To which Altman replied, "This is a remarkable claim given what I have heard alleged that Elon does to manipulate X to benefit himself and his own companies and harm his competitors and people he doesn't like."
Apple and OpenAI announced their collaboration in June, with ChatGPT integration expected to launch in Apple devices by December.
