Atlassian to Cut 1,600 Jobs as Company Accelerates Shift Toward AI
The workforce reduction will affect employees across multiple regions, with the largest share of job cuts in North America, followed by Australia and India.
Atlassian is laying off around 1,600 employees, or roughly 10% of its global workforce, as the company restructures operations to focus more heavily on artificial intelligence, according to media reports.
The Sydney-based software firm, known for collaboration tools such as Jira and Confluence, said the layoffs are part of a broader strategy to redirect resources toward AI-driven product development and enterprise services.
The workforce reduction will affect employees across multiple regions, with the largest share of job cuts in North America, followed by Australia and India. The restructuring is expected to cost the company more than $200 million in severance payments and office consolidation expenses.
Chief executive Mike Cannon-Brookes said the move reflects changes in how software companies operate in the age of AI. The company emphasised that the decision is not simply about replacing workers with automation but about adapting to new skill requirements.
Atlassian said it plans to invest more heavily in artificial intelligence capabilities and enterprise-focused products as demand for AI-powered tools grows across the technology industry. Analysts note that many tech companies are reshaping their workforce to prioritise AI engineering, data infrastructure and automation expertise.
Interestingly, a X user called 'Tech Layoff Tracker' claimed that Atlassian recorded senior engineers’ workflows for months during internal “knowledge extraction” efforts before confirming the layoffs, with some roles reportedly shifting to contractors in Bangalore using AI tools and documented prompt libraries.

The layoffs come amid a broader wave of restructuring across the tech sector, as companies adjust their hiring strategies and investment priorities to keep pace with rapid advancements in AI technologies.
Despite the job cuts, Atlassian said it will continue hiring in areas related to AI development and advanced engineering as it repositions the company for the next phase of growth.
