Salesforce is turning Slack into a shared workspace for software development, as it pushes the collaboration platform deeper into the way companies build and deploy software. To be launched at [Dreamforce 2026](https://www.salesforce.com/dreamforce/?ref=theleftshift.com), Salesforce's flagship event taking place in San Francisco between September 15-17, ***Slack Code*** allows developers and AI coding agents to work alongside each other in the same Slack channels and threads.

Salesforce CEO [Marc Benioff](https://www.linkedin.com/in/marcbenioff/?ref=theleftshift.com) describes the experience as *“real multiplayer coding,”* positioning Slack Code as an alternative to the increasingly fragmented workflow in which developers discuss a problem in Slack, move to an IDE or coding agent, and then return to Slack to share the result.

The launch brings four AI coding partners – [Anthropic](https://www.theleftshift.com/india-is-no-2-in-ai-use-but-its-ai-boom-is-mostly-an-it-story-anthropic/), GitHub, Cognition and Vercel– into Slack Code from day one. The integrations are designed to let developers bring coding agents into dedicated channels where the surrounding conversation provides context for the work.

Vercel, for instance, is launching Vercel for Slack, allowing its agent to participate in threads with production context. The agent can create implementation plans and pull requests, roll back deployments and update configurations, according to Vercel.

*"The agent is read-only by default, and anything that changes code or configuration goes through a plan that you approve. Vercel for Slack brings that whole loop into the threads where you and your team are already discussing work,"* [*Bryan Hunter*](https://www.linkedin.com/in/bryanjacobhunter/?ref=theleftshift.com)*, Senior Software Engineer,* [*Vishal Yathish*](https://www.linkedin.com/in/vishal-yathish/?ref=theleftshift.com)*, Member of Technical Staff, and* [*Kevin Corbett*](https://www.linkedin.com/in/kcorb95/?ref=theleftshift.com) *from Vercel wrote in a* [*blog post*](https://vercel.com/blog/introducing-vercel-for-slack?ref=theleftshift.com)*.*

The strategy also builds on Slack's broader push to turn conversations into actions. The platform has increasingly added AI agents, enterprise search, connected applications and tools that allow users to perform work directly from conversations. [Slackbot](https://www.theleftshift.com/salesforce-upgrades-slackbot-into-ai-powered-assistant-with-multi-agent-integrations/) can already connect to external applications through MCP servers and take actions from Slack.

Slack Code extends that strategy to one of the most technically complex areas of enterprise work: software development. Nonetheless, the launch is likely to divide developers. For some teams, putting humans and agents in the same conversational workspace could eliminate friction between discussion, decision-making and implementation.

Few developers ***The Left Shift*** has spoken to in this regard, on the other hand, point out that Slack Code will become just another layer on top of an already crowded development stack, rather than a fundamental change to how developers build software.

## Why Salesforce Is Launching Slack Code

For Salesforce, Slack Code is part of a much larger Salesforce strategy. The Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) giant wants to make Slack the interface through which employees interact with AI agents and enterprise software.

That explains why Salesforce is not trying to build its own coding agent. Instead, it is opening Slack to agents from Anthropic, GitHub, Cognition and Vercel. The value is the workplace context surrounding those agents: conversations, decisions, files, people and business systems.

Over the last few months, multiple Salesforce spokespeople have told ***The Left Shift*** how the company wants to position Slack as an ***“agentic work operating system,”*** with Slackbot, Salesforce CRM, enterprise search and third-party AI agents converging inside the platform.

Slack Code therefore isn't really an IDE. The IDE remains where developers can inspect and manipulate code at a granular level. Slack is becoming the control and collaboration layer around the IDE, where humans tell agents what needs to happen, provide context, review their work, and coordinate with colleagues.

In that sense, Slack Code may be less about coding in Slack and more about Salesforce trying to make Slack the operating system for agentic work.
