Universal Music Group and Stability AI Form Strategic Alliance to Develop Professional AI Music Tools

Universal Music Group (UMG), the world’s leading music-based entertainment company, has entered into a strategic partnership with Stability AI to co-develop next-generation professional AI tools for music creation.

The collaboration aims to empower artists, producers and songwriters globally with generative-AI solutions trained on licensed data and designed to support creative workflows.

This follows Stability AI's partnership with Electronic Arts (EA), a global leader in interactive entertainment, to co-develop next-generation generative AI models, tools, and workflows aimed at transforming how games are designed and built.

Stability AI’s research and product teams will work hand-in-hand with UMG and its artist community to explore technical approaches and creative demands for AI-enabled songwriting, composition and production.

The companies will prioritize artist feedback in the development process to ensure the tools remain ethically-built, commercially viable and aligned with artist interests.

“This agreement is an extension of our fundamental orientation that our artists and songwriters are the cornerstone of our business,” said Michael Nash, Chief Digital Officer & EVP at UMG. “With AI, as with everything else we do, we start with what best supports our work … and build from that foundation to forge new and better commercial and creative opportunities ... we will only consider advancing AI tools and products based on models that are trained responsibly.”

“UMG has long been a leader in technological innovation in music. This partnership marks the next chapter of music creation. At Stability AI, we put the artist at the center and build AI around their unique needs because real transformation has always come from a combination of art and science,” Stability AI’s CEO, Prem Akkaraju, added.

The alliance comes amid a broader shift in the music industry as labels negotiate landmark AI-licensing deals and respond to the rise of generative-music platforms.
