Tech Mahindra to Build India’s 1-Trillion-Parameter Sovereign LLM Under IndiaAI Mission

Indian IT giant Tech Mahindra has announced its development of an indigenous, sovereign large language model (LLM) with 1 trillion parameters, as part of the IndiaAI Mission.

The company was selected along with seven other entities — including Fractal Analytics and the BharatGen consortium led by IIT Bombay — to build foundational LLMs under the government’s initiative.

Mohit Joshi, CEO & MD of Tech Mahindra, described the undertaking as “a significant technical milestone,” noting that the model with 1 trillion parameters would place it among the largest AI models in development globally.

He added, “We are honoured to have been recognised by the government of India … we are partnering to develop an indigenous sovereign large language model with 1 trillion parameters, which is a significant technical milestone.”

The initiative aligns with India’s broader ambition to cultivate domestic AI capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign models. Through this mission, the government aims to foster AI sovereignty, strengthen data governance, and enable strategic control over national AI infrastructure.

Tech Mahindra’s move also coincides with its recent financial disclosures: in Q2 FY26, the company reported a net profit of ₹1,195 crore (a 4.5% year-on-year decline) and revenue of ₹13,995 crore, up 5.1% year-on-year.

Previously, as part of Project Indus, Tech Mahindra developed a Small Language Model which could communicate in over 40 Indic languages.
