Snowflake and Industry Leaders Launch Open Semantic Interchange to Standardize AI Data Semantics
The OSI represents a decisive shift from siloed, single-vendor approaches to a collaborative model built on open source, interoperability, and trust.

India, September 23, 2025 — Snowflake, Salesforce, BlackRock, dbt Labs, and RelationalAI have announced the launch of the Open Semantic Interchange (OSI) — a new open-source initiative designed to address one of AI’s most pressing challenges: fragmented data semantics.
In today’s AI-driven landscape, inconsistent definitions across tools and platforms create barriers to trust and adoption. OSI introduces a vendor-neutral semantic model specification that standardizes how semantic metadata is defined and shared, ensuring consistent business logic across AI and business intelligence (BI) applications.
AI adoption won’t scale without interoperability. That’s why Snowflake and industry-leading partners including @Salesforce, @BlackRock & @dbt_labs are launching the Open Semantic Interchange—an open standard to cut silos, boost efficiency, and accelerate AI.

“At Snowflake, we’ve long believed that interoperability and open standards are essential to unlocking the full potential of AI with your data,” said Christian Kleinerman, EVP of Product, Snowflake. “With the Open Semantic Interchange initiative, we are proud to be leading the charge alongside our partners to solve a foundational challenge for AI—the lack of a common semantic standard.”
Driving AI Adoption with Shared Standards
The OSI is designed to:
- Enhance interoperability across AI, BI, and analytics platforms by allowing them to “speak the same language.”
- Accelerate AI and BI adoption by creating context-rich, consistent data definitions that improve trust in AI-driven insights.
- Streamline operations by eliminating duplicated work and reducing the complexity of reconciling conflicting definitions.
Industry leaders have rallied behind the initiative, with companies such as Alation, Atlan, Blue Yonder, Cube, Elementum AI, Hex, Honeydew, Mistral AI, Omni, Select Star, Sigma, ThoughtSpot, and Tableau joining forces.
“The future of AI depends on trust—and trust starts with consistent, reliable data. This is the Rosetta Stone for business data,” said Southard Jones, Chief Product Officer, Tableau.
Ryan Segar, Chief Product Officer, dbt Labs, added, “By creating a universal language for data definitions, this initiative will help data practitioners ensure consistency and reliability, which is essential for scaling AI initiatives.”
From a financial perspective, BlackRock underscored the importance of interoperability. “We are excited to be part of the Open Semantic Interchange to establish a common, vendor-neutral specification that will accelerate AI and BI adoption across the financial industry,” said Diwakar Goel, Global Head of Aladdin Data, BlackRock.
Toward an Interoperable Future
The OSI represents a decisive shift from siloed, single-vendor approaches to a collaborative model built on open source, interoperability, and trust. By unifying semantics, Snowflake and its partners are laying the groundwork for scalable, enterprise-ready AI adoption across industries — from finance to healthcare to retail.
As more organizations join OSI, the initiative is set to become a cornerstone of the next phase of AI innovation, providing businesses with the semantic clarity needed to unlock powerful, reliable insights at scale.
