Sarvam AI Launches Indus Chat App as India’s AI Race Intensifies

Bengaluru-based Sarvam AI, an Indian artificial intelligence startup building models for local languages and users, has launched its Indus chat app for web and mobile platforms.

Indus serves as the interface for Sarvam’s newly unveiled 105-billion-parameter Sarvam 105B model. The Bengaluru-based startup introduced its 105B and 30B models earlier this week at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi.

Available in beta on iOS, Android and the web, Indus allows users to submit text or voice queries and receive responses in text and audio. Sign-in options include phone number and major account providers, though access currently appears limited to India.

Sarvam AI is entering a competitive market led by OpenAI, Anthropic and Google. Recently, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said ChatGPT has more than 100 million weekly active users in India.

Founded in 2023, Sarvam has raised $41 million from Lightspeed, Peak XV and Khosla Ventures. The Bengaluru-based startup is also backed by the Indian government, through the IndianAI Mission, to develop foundational models for Indian languages.
