# Qualcomm’s New Snapdragon Chip Is Built for the Agentic AI Phone

Qualcomm has unveiled its next-generation flagship smartphone processors, positioning the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 family as a key platform for on-device AI and a direct competitor to Apple’s latest high-end iPhone silicon.

Built using TSMC’s 2-nanometer process, the new chipsets will power premium Android smartphones from manufacturers including Motorola, Xiaomi and ZTE. Qualcomm is betting that AI will become a major differentiator as smartphone shipments continue to decline. The company is positioning smartphones powered by its new chips as “AI hubs” capable of running AI models and generating tokens locally rather than constantly sending workloads to the cloud.

The processors combine CPU, GPU and NPU capabilities to handle AI workloads, including [AI agents](https://www.theleftshift.com/salesforce-introduces-aiforce-to-turn-its-crm-into-an-ai-native-interface-layer/) that can operate in the background. Qualcomm has also added security controls designed to govern how those agents access sensitive information on the device.

Google is another key part of the strategy. Qualcomm said Gemini will be able to use information about a user's context, including location and sensor data, to deliver more personalised experiences. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 can [run models](https://www.theleftshift.com/google-brings-on-device-genai-to-chrome-chromebook-plus-and-pixel-watch-via-litert-lm/) with up to 30 billion parameters, according to Qualcomm.
