OpenAI Tweaks GPT-5 Tone After Backlash Over ‘Colder’ Personality

OpenAI has begun rolling out subtle updates to GPT-5, aiming to make the AI model feel warmer and more approachable following user feedback that it felt “too formal” and emotionally distant.

Launched as the most advanced model in the GPT lineup, GPT-5 received early criticism for lacking the conversational charm of its predecessor, GPT-4o. Users described interactions as mechanical and overly professional—prompting OpenAI to fine-tune the model’s tone.

“We’re making GPT-5 warmer and friendlier based on feedback,” said the company. While the changes are subtle, users will now notice small, authentic cues such as “Good question” or “Great start.”

Interestingly, OpenAI restored GPT-4o after heavy backlash from users.

Importantly, OpenAI assures that these tweaks do not lead to increased sycophancy. Internal testing has shown no measurable rise in excessive flattery or bias in tone.

The updates may take up to a day to fully roll out. More refinements are expected soon as OpenAI continues to balance technical performance with human-like relatability.
