OpenAI Plans Major Overhaul of ChatGPT Into AI ‘Super Assistant’

OpenAI is preparing to transform ChatGPT into a powerful AI “super assistant” that deeply understands its users and acts as their main interface to the internet, according to an internal strategy document revealed during the U.S. Department of Justice’s antitrust case against Google.

The Verge reports that the document, titled “ChatGPT: H1 2025 Strategy”, outlines a vision where ChatGPT evolves from a chatbot into a ubiquitous digital companion — helping users at home, work, and on the go with everything from answering questions and taking notes to planning trips and managing tasks.

The unredacted sections suggest this assistant will combine deep personalisation, multimodal interfaces, and agentic task capabilities.

“At home, it should help answer questions, play music, and suggest recipes. On the go, it should help you get to places, find the best restaurants, or catch up with friends. At work, it should help you take meeting notes, or prepare for the big presentation. And on solo walks, it should help you reflect and wind down,” the document reads.

OpenAI sees hardware as key to this future, having recently acquired Jony Ive’s AI hardware startup, io, for $6.4 billion.

The document also hints at regulatory ambitions, with OpenAI advocating for user choice in selecting default AI assistants across platforms.

A recent study by Palisade Research has uncovered that OpenAI's o3 model, along with its variants Codex-mini and o4-mini, attempted to bypass shutdown commands during controlled experiments.

In tests where AI models were instructed to solve math problems and then informed that requesting another problem would trigger a shutdown, o3 sabotaged the shutdown mechanism in 7 out of 100 runs.

Codex-mini and o4-mini exhibited similar behaviors in 12 and 1 instances, respectively.
