OpenAI Nears Deal With Amazon, Taps Trainium Chips and Cloud Sales Boost

OpenAI is in advanced talks with Amazon over a potential partnership that could deepen ties between the AI startup and the e-commerce and cloud giant, according to media reports.

As part of the discussions, Amazon is said to be seeking exclusive rights to sell OpenAI’s models to its cloud customers through Amazon Web Services (AWS).

If finalised, the deal would further strengthen AWS’s position in the increasingly competitive market for generative AI infrastructure and enterprise AI services.

The talks reportedly also involve OpenAI using Amazon’s in-house Trainium chips, which are designed for AI training and inference and compete directly with processors from Nvidia and Google. The move would signal OpenAI’s growing interest in diversifying its compute stack beyond Nvidia’s dominant GPUs.

In addition, OpenAI is exploring the possibility of selling an enterprise version of ChatGPT to Amazon.

However, it is not yet known whether any agreement would include the integration of ChatGPT features into Amazon’s consumer-facing products, such as shopping tools the company is developing for its own apps.
