OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Atlas — A Browser Built Around AI
Atlas embeds ChatGPT directly into the browsing experience.

OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Atlas, a new web browser designed with ChatGPT integrated at its core — marking the company’s biggest push yet to make AI a seamless part of everyday web use.
Earlier this year, AI startup Perplexity AI released a similar AI web browser called Comet, which integrates Perplexity’s AI search tools directly into the browsing experience, effectively “traveling the web with” users rather than acting as an add-on.
Unlike traditional browsers, Atlas embeds ChatGPT directly into the browsing experience, enabling users to get real-time assistance, automate tasks, and access contextual help without switching tabs or copying text.

The browser combines ChatGPT’s conversational AI, search capabilities, and memory features to act as a “super-assistant” that understands what users are doing online and helps them accomplish goals faster.
“Now ChatGPT instantly understands what I’m looking at, helping me improve my knowledge checks as I go,” said Yogya Kalra, a college student and early tester of Atlas.
Atlas also introduces browser memories, allowing ChatGPT to recall information from previously visited sites — such as job postings or research topics — to deliver personalised assistance later.
OpenAI emphasised that these memories are optional and fully user-controlled, with options to view, archive, or delete them anytime.
The browser includes Agent Mode, enabling ChatGPT to handle tasks like planning events, analysing data, or booking appointments directly within the browsing context. The feature launches in preview for Plus, Pro, and Business users.
ChatGPT Atlas is now available globally on macOS for Free, Plus, Pro, and Go users, with versions for Windows, iOS, and Android coming soon.
Early users have taken to social media to call ChatGPT Atlas little more than a Chromium wrapper, accusing OpenAI of repackaging existing ideas.
“OpenAI Atlas is the ultimate ragebait — a Chromium wrapper that just copied Perplexity Comet and called it ‘Agentic,’” one X user posted, echoing growing skepticism online.
Chromium is an open-source web browser project that serves as the foundation for Google's browser Chrome, and other browsers such as Microsoft Edge and Opera. Interestingly, AI browsers like Atlas and Comet are being positioned as competitors to Chrome.

With all his billions, altman couldn't build better browser technology than the one powering the browser he intends to kill.
