OpenAI has unveiled its most advanced AI assistant yet—ChatGPT Agent—a tool designed to complete complex computer-based tasks directly within ChatGPT. Rolling out to Pro, Plus, and Team subscribers, the new “agent mode” can be activated from ChatGPT’s dropdown menu.

The agent goes beyond answering questions—it can schedule events, generate presentations, run code, and even plan meals or build research-backed reports.

It integrates OpenAI’s previous tools like Operator and Deep Research and connects with external apps like Gmail and GitHub via ChatGPT connectors. This allows users to retrieve specific information, automate workflows, and operate apps using natural language prompts.

"At the core of this new capability is a unified agentic system. It brings together three strengths of earlier breakthroughs: Operator’s ability to interact with websites, deep research’s skill in synthesizing information, and ChatGPT’s intelligence and conversational fluency," the startup said in a blog post.

With these powerful capabilities come new risks. OpenAI classified the model as “high capability” in biosecurity domains and introduced live monitoring, layered classifiers, and disabled memory to prevent misuse.

While past AI agents have faltered in real-world performance, OpenAI says this release marks a leap forward. Still, industry observers remain watchful to see whether ChatGPT Agent can finally deliver on the long-held promise of autonomous digital assistance.
