OpenAI Announces ‘OpenAI for Science’ to Accelerate Global Scientific Discovery with AI

OpenAI has announced the launch of OpenAI for Science, a new initiative aimed at creating an AI-powered platform to accelerate scientific discovery. The project was unveiled by Kevin Weil, Chief Product Officer at OpenAI, who described it as the “next great scientific instrument.”

Weil said the effort will begin with a small team of top-tier academics who are not only leaders in their fields but also deeply immersed in AI and skilled at communicating complex science.

This group will collaborate with OpenAI researchers to demonstrate how advanced AI models can meaningfully contribute to fundamental science. "Innovation is the reason the US leads the world. Few domains hold as much promise for improving lives as science," Weil said.

The initiative reflects OpenAI’s belief that artificial intelligence can significantly speed up research across disciplines. Weil emphasized that scientific innovation drives progress in daily life, national security, and the global economy.

Last month, OpenAI released GPT-5, its most advanced AI model so far. The startup claimed it delivers significantly more accurate answers compared to its predecessors, with a notable reduction in hallucinations.
