OpenAI Acquires TBPN to Expand AI Communication and Industry Engagement

OpenAI has acquired tech-focused media platform TBPN, to strengthen how the company communicates and engages with the broader AI ecosystem.
TBPN is known for hosting conversations around technology, startups and artificial intelligence, and has built a strong following among developers, founders and investors.
The acquisition, announced internally by Fidji Simo, OpenAI CEO, AGI Deployments, brings TBPN’s editorial team, audience reach and industry influence into OpenAI’s fold.
Simo said the move reflects OpenAI’s evolving approach to communication as AI adoption accelerates globally. Rather than relying on traditional corporate messaging, the company is seeking more direct and dynamic ways to engage with users and builders shaping the industry.
“I’m excited to share that we’ve acquired TBPN. This acquisition brings a team with strong editorial instincts, deep audience understanding, and a proven ability to convene influential voices across tech, business, and culture,” Simo said.
She added that TBPN has become a key platform where discussions around AI and innovation are actively taking place, making it a natural fit for OpenAI’s broader mission.
Despite the acquisition, OpenAI emphasised that TBPN will retain editorial independence. The platform will continue to run its programming, select guests and make editorial decisions independently, a move aimed at preserving its credibility and voice within the tech community.
TBPN will operate within OpenAI’s strategy organisation and report to Chris Lehane. The deal also brings TBPN’s communications and marketing expertise into OpenAI, which the company plans to leverage to improve how it presents AI technologies to the public.
Commenting on the acquisition, Jordi Hays, TBPN Co-Founder, said: “Over the past year, we’ve had a front-row seat not just to OpenAI, but to the entire ecosystem, covering the daily news, announcements, and launches in real-time.
"While we’ve been critical of the industry at times, after getting to know Sam and the OpenAI team, what stood out most was their openness to feedback and commitment to getting this right. Moving from commentary to real impact in how this technology is distributed and understood globally is incredibly important to us.”
Recently, OpenAI closed a massive funding round with $122 billion in committed capital, valuing the company at $852 billion post-money, as it accelerates efforts to build what it describes as the core infrastructure layer for artificial intelligence.
