OpenAI Acquires neptune.ai to Power Next-Gen Model Training

Polish-born AI tooling company neptune.ai has entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by OpenAI, a move that promises to deepen the infrastructure undergirding the world’s most advanced AI research stack.

Founded in 2017, neptune.ai built its reputation as a robust metrics dashboard and experiment tracking platform — designed to help AI researchers monitor, analyze, and manage the often messy, iterative process of training large-scale machine learning models.

As neptune.ai itself explained, “From its beginning, the Neptune team focused on the hands-on, iterative work of model development.”

Under the deal, the neptune.ai team and their tools will be absorbed into OpenAI. External services will be phased out by March 4, 2026, with existing customers encouraged to export data and transition to other platforms.

OpenAI said the acquisition will integrate neptune.ai’s monitoring capabilities into its core training stack — providing deeper visibility into model behavior, metrics across network layers, and real-time debugging of training workflows.

“Neptune has built a fast, precise system that allows researchers to analyze complex training workflows. We plan to iterate with them to integrate their tools deep into our training stack to expand our visibility into how models learn,” said Jakub Pachocki, OpenAI’s Chief Scientist.

For neptune.ai’s founder Piotr Niedźwiedź, the acquisition represents the realisation of a long-held vision. “This is an exciting step for us. We’ve always believed that good tools help researchers do their best work. Joining OpenAI gives us the chance to bring that belief to a new scale,” he said.
