OpenAI Acquires AI Healthcare App Torch in $100 Mn Deal to Boost ChatGPT Health

OpenAI has reached an agreement to acquire Torch, a one-year-old artificial intelligence healthcare app, in a deal valued at about $100 million in equity, according to media reports.

The acquisition is aimed at strengthening OpenAI’s growing healthcare capabilities, particularly its recently launched ChatGPT Health feature. It allows users to securely connect medical records and apps such as Apple Health, MyFitnessPal and Function, grounding responses in personal health data.

Torch specialises in unifying fragmented medical data—including lab results, medications, and clinical visit records—into a single, AI-readable format that helps users analyse and manage their personal health information.

The startup’s four-member team, including co-founders and engineers, will join OpenAI to integrate its technology and expertise into ChatGPT Health’s development.

“We’ve acquired Torch, a healthcare startup that unifies lab results, medications, and visit recordings. Bringing this together with ChatGPT Health opens up a new way to understand and manage your health,” OpenAI said in a post on X, highlighting the strategic importance of the acquisition.

Torch’s founders, several of whom previously worked together at the now-defunct AI-enabled healthcare provider Forward Health, described their work as building “a medical memory for AI” that aggregates health data from diverse sources.

This context engine is expected to enhance ChatGPT Health’s ability to deliver personalised insights and deeper analysis of users’ health records.

" When Ilya Abyzov and I started Forward, the mission was healthcare for a billion people, for free. The path was harder than we imagined, but the mission didn’t end—Torch was built to carry the flame," founder and CEO Adrian Aoun, said in a LinkedIn post.
