Mozilla is introducing [Smart Window](https://www.firefox.com/en-US/smart-window/?view=waitlist&ref=theleftshift.com), an AI-powered workspace to help users turn the clutter and context of everyday web browsing into a more organised workflow, while keeping control of personal data at the centre of the experience.

Unlike conventional AI assistants that typically begin with a blank chat window, Smart Window is designed to pick up from where users are already working. It can use existing tabs, browsing context and progress to help users continue research without having to reconstruct what they were doing.

[Mozilla](https://www.theleftshift.com/mozilla-calls-out-microsoft-again-says-edge-still-uses-deceptive-tactics-to-lock-in-windows-users/) says Smart Window can transform multiple open tabs into an intelligent workspace capable of organising, comparing and prioritising information. The aim is to help users move from browsing to answers and decisions more quickly.

The product also includes a visual browsing-history feature that allows users to retrace their steps and recover information they may have encountered earlier.

Smart Window is also designed to support different stages of online research. Users can group information when their browser becomes cluttered, visualise their browsing history when they lose track of a source, seek a second opinion when weighing options, summarise information when time is limited and use planning capabilities when they are unsure where to begin.

Mozilla says privacy is a central part of Mozilla's pitch and it does not retain Smart Window chat transcripts, use conversations to train models or [sell user data](https://www.theleftshift.com/google-buys-bankrupt-spirit-airlines-enterprise-data-to-train-ai-models/). Limited technical information may be processed to keep the service operational, while chat content is shared only when users choose to do so.

The company is also introducing device-based “Memories” that allow Smart Window to become more useful over time. Mozilla says these memories are stored locally rather than on its servers, with users able to view, delete or disable them.

Smart Window also gives users greater control over how they interact with AI. They can switch between chat and search, open the assistant only when needed and choose from three [AI models](https://www.theleftshift.com/iisc-researchers-unveil-ai-speech-model-covering-65-indian-languages-and-dialects/) or bring their own model, according to Mozilla.
