Meta Launches 'Edits' — A Free TikTok CapCut Rival for Instagram Creators

Meta has officially launched Edits, a new video editing app designed to rival TikTok’s CapCut. Available for free on both Android and iOS, Edits allows users to transform raw footage into polished Instagram Reels with advanced tools and no watermarks.

"Our goal is to build the most compelling creative tools to help creators express themselves freely in all the ways they can imagine, not just on Instagram and Facebook, but on any platform out there," Meta said in a blog post.

Originally teased in January, Edits appears to be Meta’s strategic move to fill the gap left behind by the ban on TikTok in the US.

Meta is seizing the opportunity to offer creators a powerful alternative. YouTube, too, has recently stepped up its editing game, adding new tools for its creators.

With Edits, creators get a dedicated space packed with powerful video tools:

  • Streamlined workflow: Capture up to 10 minutes of footage, manage projects easily, and export in high quality—no watermarks. Share directly to Instagram or Facebook, or anywhere else.
  • Pro-grade editing: Precise timeline editing, auto-enhance, green screen, and smooth transitions.
  • Smart insights: Get real-time data like skip rate to optimize content performance and fine-tune what works.

Interestingly, app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi posted on X that Meta is developing a premium tier—called Asteria—which could unlock next-gen generative AI features.

Looking ahead, Meta plans to expand Edits with advanced features like keyframe animation, collaborative tools, and enhanced customisations.
