Meta Acquires AI Wearable Startup Limitless to Expand Its Smart Glasses and Wearables Ambitions
Limitless developed a small, lightweight wearable resembling a miniature pair of headphones
Meta Platforms Inc. has acquired Limitless Inc., a Denver-based startup best known for its AI-powered wearable designed to record and summarise conversations, marking Meta’s latest move to expand its footprint in consumer AI hardware. The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Limitless has raised $33 million in funding from investors, including First Round Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, NEA and OpenAI Group PBC Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman. The deal is notable given that Meta competes directly with OpenAI in the market for large language models.
Founded as a consumer AI hardware company, Limitless developed a small, lightweight wearable resembling a miniature pair of headphones. Measuring about 1.25 inches wide, the device can be clipped to clothing using a magnetic clasp or worn as a pendant.
It continuously records conversations, converts speech to text and applies AI models to surface key insights from those interactions.
The wearable uses an array of miniature microphones with beamforming technology, allowing it to focus on audio from specific directions while filtering out background noise. All components, including a battery rated for up to 100 hours of use between charges, are housed in a waterproof casing and charged via USB-C.
Before the acquisition, Limitless sold the device for $99 and offered paid subscription tiers that increased the monthly volume of audio users could process. The company also operated a desktop application, Rewind, which enabled AI-powered search across recorded conversations and local files.
Following the acquisition, Meta will sunset the Rewind app and halt new sales of the wearable. Existing users will continue to receive device support until at least next December and will be granted free access to the company’s top-tier subscription plan with unlimited transcription.
