MakeMyTrip has unveiled a new AI-powered feature, Seat Availability Forecast, to help Indian rail travelers better plan ticket bookings amid high demand and unpredictable availability.

The tool predicts when seats on a selected train are likely to sell out, using years of historical booking data and real-time demand patterns.

Reserved train tickets in India open 60 days in advance, but most travelers book closer to the departure date.

MakeMyTrip's data reveals nearly 40% of users make bookings across multiple sessions—and 70% of these end up with waitlisted tickets due to lack of confirmed availability.

Demand patterns have been shifting rapidly. In April, high-speed trains were sold out 13 days ahead, while in May, bookings closed more than 20 days in advance, the company said. This unpredictability often leaves travelers guessing.

“We are focused on our mission to anticipate and address the nuanced needs of Indian rail passengers. Seat Availability Forecast is a result of that effort, rooted in data science, built to be seamless, and designed to solve a real planning challenge,” Rajesh Magow, Co-founder and Group CEO of MakeMyTrip, said.

The company also launched Sold-out Alerts, notifying users when seat availability drops below a set threshold, ensuring timely bookings.
