# Intel to Lay off 21000 Employees

Intel is preparing to cut over 21,000 jobs—approximately 20% of its global workforce—according to a [report](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-04-23/intel-to-announce-plans-this-week-to-cut-more-than-20-of-staff?srnd=homepage-americas&ref=theleftshift.com) by *Bloomberg*. The announcement is expected later this week, just ahead of the company’s Q1 earnings call.

The layoffs mark a major move by newly appointed CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who took over from Pat Gelsinger in late 2024\. 

Tan is aiming to streamline Intel’s management structure and reestablish a stronger engineering-driven culture at the company.

This is the latest in a series of cuts for Intel, which had already [reduced headcount ](https://www.theverge.com/2024/8/1/24210656/intel-is-laying-off-over-10000-employees-and-will-cut-10-billion-in-costs?ref=theleftshift.com)by 15,000 in August 2024\. As of the end of last year, the company employed around 108,900 people.

Intel has faced ongoing challenges, with its stock falling roughly 67% over the past five years. Since stepping into the CEO role, Tan has pushed to restructure the company by spinning off certain divisions into “non-core” units. 

Recently, Intel [appointed](https://www.theleftshift.com/intel-appoints-sachin-katti-as-cto-and-head-of-ai-in-major-leadership-overhaul/) Sachin Katti as its new Chief Technology Officer and Head of AI, signaling a strategic leadership shift under Tan.

The move is part of Tan’s broader effort to streamline decision-making and sharpen Intel’s focus on artificial intelligence.
