# Indian AI Startup Beatoven.ai Shuts Down as Competition Intensifies in AI Music

Indian AI music startup [Beatoven.ai](https://www.beatoven.ai/?ref=theleftshift.com) has discontinued its business-to-consumer (B2C) service after six years, as intensifying competition in generative AI music made it increasingly difficult for the company to sustain its original model, according to its founder.

[Mansoor Rahimat Khan](https://www.linkedin.com/in/mansoorkhansitar/?ref=theleftshift.com), Co-Founder & CEO of Beatoven.ai said in a LinkedIn [post](https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7505495872986734592/?ref=theleftshift.com) that the startup officially discontinued its B2C offering last month.

Beatoven.ai had built its technology around an approach focused on ethically licensing music and developing foundational models from scratch. However, Khan said the company faced growing pressure from heavily funded competitors that built their models using large-scale data scraping.

> *“*Our original approach of ethically licensing music and building foundational models from scratch faced strong headwinds as heavily funded competitors emerged, building models through data scraping. Competing head-to-head with those dynamics became increasingly challenging*,” Khan said.* 

Beatoven.ai’s core team has been absorbed by Rusk Media, where it will continue working on generative media. However, Khan has managed to retain the intellectual property associated with Beatoven’s Maestro model.

Khan is now exploring business-to-business opportunities by licensing its proprietary Maestro model and music-intelligence technology for commercial and enterprise applications. Khan said the company is currently in discussions with potential technology licensing partners.

Reflecting on Beatoven.ai’s journey, Khan highlighted user retention as one of the biggest challenges for prosumer content-creation products. He also pointed to the difficulties of music licensing, describing the industry as fragmented and difficult to navigate, while noting that developing audio foundation models requires extensive iteration.

Beatoven.ai's move comes against a broader backdrop of AI startups struggling to find sustainable business models. Earlier this year, [Zams (previously Obviously AI) shut shop](https://www.theleftshift.com/ai-startup-zams-shuts-down-as-founder-warns-ai-app-layer-has-become-indistinguishable/) after seven years in business, with founder Nirman Dave attributing the decision to the rapid commoditisation of AI applications as foundation models continue to absorb product capabilities.
