# India Is No. 2 in AI Use, But Its AI Boom Is Mostly an IT Story: Anthropic

India is emerging as one of the world's biggest users of generative AI, but Anthropic's latest data reveals a striking contradiction. The country ranks second globally by overall Claude use, behind only the US, yet falls to 101st out of 116 countries when usage is adjusted for its working-age population, according to Anthropic's recent economic research [blog](https://www.anthropic.com/research/india-brief-economic-index?ref=theleftshift.com) titled *"India Country Brief: The Anthropic Economic Index."*

This means much of the country's AI activity is concentrated among a relatively small section of the workforce, particularly technology professionals and workers in India's established IT hubs.

According to Anthropic's India Country Brief, India accounted for 5.8% of total Claude.ai use between November 13 and 20, 2025\. Only the US recorded a larger share. But on a per-capita basis, India's position changes dramatically, with countries including Singapore and Malaysia recording significantly higher adoption. 

[Anthropic says](https://www.theleftshift.com/anthropic-warns-that-the-biggest-enterprise-ai-risk-may-be-agents-that-stop-following-orders/) the gap indicates that India's large overall usage is driven partly by the sheer size of its population rather than widespread individual adoption.

## India’s AI adoption is concentrated where its IT industry already is

The geographic distribution of Claude use provides perhaps the clearest explanation for the discrepancy. States like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Delhi together account for more than half of India's Claude usage, with Maharashtra at 15.5%, Tamil Nadu at 13.2%, Karnataka at 12.7% and Delhi at 10.5%. Anthropic says this distribution closely mirrors India's existing IT-sector geography and urban economic output.

The concentration becomes even clearer when looking at what Indians are actually asking AI to do. India ranks first globally in the share of AI use devoted to software-related tasks, with such tasks accounting for 45.2% of O\*NET-mapped [Claude](https://www.theleftshift.com/anthropic-opens-claude-ai-to-scientists-tackling-rare-diseases-with-50-000-grant/) activity in the country. Vietnam follows at 42.1% and Egypt at 39.2%. The occupational mix also skews heavily towards software development and engineering roles.

That does not mean India's current AI adoption is superficial. In fact, Anthropic's data suggests the opposite. Indian users are more likely than the global average to use Claude for work. 51.3% of Claude usage in India is work-related, compared with 46% globally, while personal use accounts for 27.8% in India against 34.7% globally.

More strikingly, Anthropic estimates that Indian users spend an average of 14.8 minutes completing tasks with AI that would otherwise take 3.8 hours without assistance. That represents roughly a 15x productivity speedup, compared with about 12x globally.

## Claude is half the story

The report should be read as a Claude-specific snapshot rather than a complete picture of India’s AI adoption. Anthropic’s ranking is based on Claude usage, which means it captures how Indians use one frontier AI model, not how the country uses AI overall. 

That matters because India is also one of [OpenAI’s biggest markets](https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/india/openai-ranks-india-among-top-ai-markets-globally-highlights-adoption-gap/articleshow/130281586.cms?from=mdr&ref=theleftshift.com), with more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users as of February 2026, according to OpenAI. India’s AI ecosystem also spans Gemini and a growing range of [Indian models](https://www.theleftshift.com/iisc-researchers-unveil-ai-speech-model-covering-65-indian-languages-and-dialects/) and applications, making any single-model usage data an incomplete proxy for national AI adoption.

There is also a significant layer of AI use that does not look like chatbot usage at all. Indian governments and businesses are deploying [AI through voice interfaces](https://www.theleftshift.com/top-5-voice-ai-startups-in-india-in-2026/), multilingual systems and domain-specific applications for public services, healthcare, agriculture and governance. 

The government says Bhashini, for instance, supports speech recognition, translation and text-to-speech across Indian languages, while startups such as [Sarvam AI](https://www.theleftshift.com/sarvam-signs-defence-ai-deal-with-indian-navy-to-power-multimodal-drona-2-0/) are building voice and language systems for citizen services. 

This suggests India’s AI story is not simply about how often people open Claude or ChatGPT, but increasingly about AI being embedded into services and workflows where users may never know which model is powering the experience.
