Google Unveils 'Gemini for Home,' Upgrading Smart Homes With Conversational AI

Google has launched Gemini for Home, a major AI upgrade designed to transform how users interact with their smart homes. This new system replaces the Google Assistant on smart displays and speakers and enhances cameras, doorbells, and the Google Home app with more natural, conversational understanding.

"Gemini for Home is a new, foundational intelligence that transforms your relationship with your home," Anish Kattukaran, chief product officer for Google Home and Nest, wrote in a blog post.

With Gemini for Home, users gain access to 10 new voices with realistic pacing and intonation. The system supports longer, context-aware conversations, meaning you can follow up on tasks without restating your original request.

For instance, after asking, “Hey Google, my dishwasher isn’t draining, what should I check first?” you could simply add, “The filter looks good, what next?” and Gemini will understand the context.

Gemini also brings improvements to smart home control. You can now issue complex commands such as “Turn off all the lights, except the office,” and devices will obey. Smart home routines and automations become more intuitive and flexible.

A revamped Google Home app backs these enhancements, offering streamlined navigation across tabs like Home, Activity, and Automations, and introducing “Ask Home,” where voice or text requests control devices or trigger actions.

"This leap in understanding isn't just about answering new questions; it's about making everyday things you already do simpler and more intuitive. Gemini can better help you across with the main ways you use your assistant today: media, household coordination and smart home control," Kattukaran added.

This upgrade is rolling out initially via early access, with full compatibility coming to existing Google and Nest devices later. A subscription plan, Google Home Premium, will unlock advanced features like AI-powered notifications, “Home Brief” summaries, and extended video history.
